A few years ago Vignamaggio acquired control of 25 hectares (62 acres) of vineyards in the Salento area of Puglia, near the town of Veglie. Here we planted indigenous varieties like Primitivo and international ones like Syrah. The hot and sunny weather in this area allows for a perfect maturation of the grapes. From these impeccably run vineyards come the grapes for Levanter (85% Primitivo with 15% Syrah) named after a warm wind from the orient. The harvest ends within the first 10 days of September and fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats for 10-12 days at controlled temperature of 28-30°C (82-86F). Afterwards, the wines undergo malolactic fermentation and then they are aged in Veglie for 4 months and later brought to Vignamaggio where, after further wood aging, they are bottled. Levanter is ruby red in color, with a fruity nose of ripe fruit. The mouth feel is full and warm. It accompanies well both rich and spicy pasta dishes as well as roasted red meat or mildly aged cheeses. Serving temperature 18-20°C (64-68F)
